It was a rough night for Tooele County high schools, as Stansbury, Grantsville and Tooele all lost their Friday games on the road.
Green Canyon 24, Stansbury 0
Right out of the gate, Stansbury found itself in a rough spot as the Wolves returned the opening kickoff with a 85-yard return. Fortunately for the Stallions, strong defense and an untimely Green Canyon penalty led to limit the Wolves to a field goal to make the score 3-0.
The Stallions struggled over their next few drives, as the team was unable to Following a punt by Stansbury with four minutes remaining in the first, the Wolves marched the ball down the field to punch in a rushing touchdown and extend the lead to 10-0 that they carried into the half.
Stansbury’s woes carried over into the third quarter, as their opening drive sputtered out to give Green Canyon the ball on a turnover on downs. After scoring another touchdown, bringing the lead to 17-0, the Wolves showed they had full command of the game.
To cap things off, the Wolves spent over half of the fourth quarter eating the clock with a scoring drive, moving the ball down the field for a seven-minute drive to widen the score to 24-0. With Stansbury unable to respond, the score held and the Stallions walked off the field with their first loss of the season.
Uintah 45, Tooele 29
Despite keeping pace throughout much of the game, the Buffaloes were unable to close the gap against the Uintah Utes and fell 45-29. After scoring the game’s first touchdown to go ahead 6-0 in the first, Tooele found itself on its heels for the remainder of the quarter.
Uintah bounced back by scoring 21 unanswered points in the first, then tacked on another touchdown to take a 28-6 lead with nine minutes left in the half. The Buffaloes made a mini-push of their own, scoring 14 points to the Ute’s added seven, heading into the locker room trailing 35-21.
Following a low-scoring third quarter, where Uintah swelled its lead to 42-21, the Buffaloes were unable to mount a comeback in the final frame of the game. After surrendering a field goal to the Utes with four minutes remaining, Tooele was only able to put up one last touchdown to ultimately fall 45-29.
Beaver 35, Grantsville 0
A first quarter scoring outburst by the host Beaver Beavers dug a deep hole for the Cowboys, which they were unable to recover from over the course of the game.
Beaver got on the board in a big way in the first quarter, putting up 21 points while stymieing Grantsville over the same span of time. Things were ramped up even more in the second, when the Beavers drove in another two scores to increase their lead to 35-0.
The deficit proved too wide for Grantsville, who were unable to put up any points and ended the game being shutout in their second game of the season. The last time the Cowboys were held scoreless in an entire game was early last season, when they fell 41-0 to Provo High in 2023.
