Friday’s game between the Stansbury Stallions football team marked the opening to region play for both teams as the second half of the season gets underway. Friday also marked the coming out party for the Stallions’ offense, who piled on the points early and often en route to a 62-0 drubbing.

Stansbury wasted no time in the first quarter to make their mark, [scoring on their first drive of the game], then later adding eight points to pull ahead 15-0. By the end of the game’s first 12 minutes, the Stallions had tacked on 20 more points to take a commanding 35-0 lead into the second.

Over the same period of time, Cottonwood’s offense never became settled and the Colt’s quarterback threw multiple interceptions, some of which resulted in pick-six touchdowns. As a result of the team’s struggles, the game got out of hand quickly and the Stallions took full advantage.

After another 20-point outburst by Stansbury, in the form of two rushing touchdowns and a 60-yard pass completion, both teams finished the half after the Stallions’ lead swelled to 55-0.

Aside from the accelerated clock, due to the mercy rule, things eventually slowed down in the second half. Proving they weren’t finished for the night, however, the Stallions recovered a fumble midway through the third quarter and capitalized on the ensuing possession with a 60-yard rushing touchdown by quarterback Brighton Reutzel.

With the margin extended to 62-0, Cottonwood’s chance at a comeback whas thoroughly out of reach and more struggles by the team’s offense prohibited the team from registering a single point. When the final horn sounded, Stansbury walked away with the lopsided victory and earned its second win of the season.

Next up for the Stallions is a road game at Jordan High, where they will face the 0-4 Beetdiggers in another region matchup. The game kickoff at 7p.m.

Elsewhere

Tooele found itself on the wrong side of a 48-10 contest against the Timpanogos Timberwolves, After falling behind 14-0 in the first quarter, the Buffaloes were held scoreless in thee first half and trailed 28-0 heading into the third.

Despite finally breaking onto the board with a field goal in the final minute of the third quarter, Tooele only mustered a single touchdown all night long and ultimately fell after allowing another 20 points by the Timberwolves. After the 48-10 loss, Tooele’s record falls to 1-3 as the team’s losing streak extends to three. The Buffaloes play their first region game next week, traveling to play Cottonwood High.

Grantsville hosted its game Friday night, facing off against the Juab Wasps in another non-region contest. After a relatively low-scoring first half, during which both teams scored a touchdown, the teams headed into the third quarter tied 7-7.

Juab struck first early in the third quarter, with a long rushing touchdown to pull ahead 14-7, but Grantsville responded in the ensuing drive before adding another seven points to take a 21-14 lead early in the third.

While the Wasps managed to tie the game up with a touchdown to bring the score to 21-21, the Cowboys took over for the remainder of the game and scored 13 unanswered points to win 34-21. With the win, Grantsville’s record improves to 3-1 with only one non-region game remaining. The team hits the road next week, facing off against the North Sanpete Hawks on Sept. 13.
