Stallions football avoids Desert Hills comeback, hangs on to win 33-27

Stansbury will play in the quarterfinals of the 4A Football State Championship tournament next week, following a close 33-27 victory over the Desert Hills Thunder.

Heading into the second half ahead 19-7, the Stallions were outscored 20-14 over the third and fourth quarters and faced a come-from-behind scoring drive from the Thunder in the final three minutes of the game. Despite Desert Hills getting across the 50-yard-line and threatening to score, a Stallions defender picked off a pass from the Thunder’s quarterback.

With possession and less than a minute to go, Stansbury wound down the clock and walked away with a 33-27 victory. Next week, the Stallions will travel to Millville to face the Ridgeline Riverhawks in the second round. Kickoff is at 6 p.m.

Grantsville football shuts down Ogden 30-0 and moves on to the 3A semifinal

In another shutout over the Ogden Tigers, the Grantsville Cowboys smothered their opponent and advanced to the next round of the 3A Football Championship tournament following their 30-0 victory.

Grantsville took a 16-0 lead into the half and came out with a purpose over the final two quarters of their quarterfinal game on Friday. Despite penalty issues early in the third, the Cowboys’ Jordan Fawson pulled a touchdown reception to give his team a 23-0 lead that was taken into the fourth quarter.

After Grantsville tacked on another score with less than six minutes remaining in the game, Ogden failed to register a single point over its final drive and the Cowboys walked off the field with the 30-0 win. Up next is a semifinal game against the Richfield Wildcats on Nov. 8. The game will take place at Zions Bank Stadium in Herriman and kicks off at 7 p.m.

Cowboys girls volleyball advances to quarterfinals of state tourney, bumped to underbracket after loss to North Sanpete

After sweeping the Summit Academy Bears, 3-0 in the second round of the 3A state tournament, the Grantsville Cowboys girls volleyball team fell to the North Sanpete Hawks later Friday evening.

In the quarterfinal round, the Hawks narrowly edged past Grantsville 25-21, 26-24 and 27-25 to advance to the semifinals. With the loss, Grantsville was dropped to the quarterfinal loss bracket and faced the Union Cougars Saturday morning.
