During the Grantsville Cowboys football team’s bye week, their upcoming opponent Ogden Tigers handily defeated the Union Cougars 42-6 to secure a quarterfinal match up against Grantsville. The sixth-ranked Tigers will visit Cowboy Stadium this Friday to face the third-ranked team in Grantsville’s final home match of the season. The winner of the game will advance to the Nov. 8 semifinals, which will take place at Zions Bank Stadium.
As a top-tier team heading into the tournament, Grantsville finished the regular season with an 8-2 overall record, which included a 4-1 region record. For the Tigers, the team holds a 7-3 record up to this point, with a 2-3 region record in the 3A- North.
In the two teams’ only meeting this season, it was the performance of kicker Brent Knickerbocker who helped the Cowboys defeat Ogden 17-0. Aside from a safety, Knickerbocker scored all of Grantsville’s points in 15 points on five field goal attempts, and has been key to the team’s success in special teams.
Leading up to the game, Cowboys head coach David Millward said he has been impressed with his team’s progression over the course of the season and that his players are on the right track heading into the playoffs. During the team’s bye, Millward added that his goal is for the team to continue working toward fine-tuning the basics that have led to success week after week.
“We have talked about growth throughout the season; how we want to improve each week,” he said. “We are going to focus on the fundamentals and make sure we are doing the little things that help make us successful.”
While the Cowboys had a resounding 55-14 victory over Union on Oct. 11, Millward said initially that his team had no preference between the Cougars and Ogden.
It doesn’t matter who we play,” he said. “We focus on us and what we do — both teams [would] give us different challenges that we have to deal with.”
Friday’s game will kickoff at 7 p.m.
