A 51-year-old man was arrested last week in Tooele City after he was located with several warrants, Katana-style swords, and drug paraphernalia.
The man was charged with obstruction of justice and three counts of possession of a dangerous weapon by a restricted individual, all third-degree felonies. He was also charged with use or possession of drug paraphernalia, a class B misdemeanor.
On Wednesday, September 25, the man was arrested after a Tooele City Police officer observed him on a sidewalk and realized he had several warrants out for his arrest and was a fugitive from Adult Probation and Parole, according to a probable cause statement written by the arresting officer.
During the arrest, the officer located three Katana-style swords concealed in his pants. The swords reportedly had sharp edges and were described as dangerous weapons by the officer. The officer also located a glass pipe on the man with burnt drug residue and a plastic tooter, commonly used for smoking illegal substances, according to the PC statement.
After he was arrested, the man was taken to the Tooele County Jail, where he informed officers that he had intentionally ingested three fentanyl pills after seeing officers and knowing they were going to arrest him. By taking the pills, the officer reported that the man destroyed evidence, which would have come with enhanced charges against him based upon his criminal history.
Police reported that the man was a restricted person because he was on Class A probation and was restricted from possessing any dangerous or deadly weapons.
